About Me

I’m Pete O’Brien, a designer with over 20 years of experience and a teacher of Three Dimensional Design. I live in Brighton with my wife and daughter, I teach in a school and sixth form college on the south coast and do my design work out of my home office and workshop. When I am not teaching, designing or making climbing holds, I love to climb on rocks, travel and go on adventures with my friends and family.

I love to design, create and make. Whether it's working with individuals, start-ups, small businesses or multinational companies, I strive to deliver creative solutions that meet the needs of the brief. I like to get know my clients and believe that working together produces the best results.

Climbing holds

I've been a keen climber for many years. When my little girl Luna was born, it wasn't long before she was getting involved. She was climbing before she could walk. At around 2 years old she was super keen to climb at our local bouldering centre, but was just too young. I ended up screwing a sheet of plywood to the wall in our garage and I made a series of basic holds out of pine for her to paint and climb on. Fast-forward 8 years and both the garage wall and the climbing holds have come on quite a bit... along with our climbing ability.

We have sent our holds to happy customers all over the world and had them set on walls in the UK, USA, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Cech Republic and New Zealand.

I make our holds from various hardwoods and plywoods, most of the wood comes in the form of offcuts or is reclaimed, the aim is to create no waste. I shape every hold by hand in my small workshop at the bottom of my garden in Brighton. Sometimes I set out with a plan for a particular set. Sometimes I let the grain and characteristics of the wood dictate the shape. I test out all our hold designs on our garage spray wall, developing and refining as I go.
